Bright Spots

I have been dreaming of this outfit for about 3 days now. It came to me when I was trying to sleep. BUT since everything that made this outfit what it is was at school. aka: where I wasn't.

Breakdown:
dress- F21 (when Baton Rouge only had Gadzooks and no one here knew what F21 was)
tights- Target
coat- Joseph Ribkoff via garage sale
pumps- Liz Claiborne
jewelry- thrifted
shades- Ray-Ban New Wayfarers

My friend, Sarah, took my photos today on campus by the Katrina fountain. During the day, it just looks like a hole in the ground. But at night it's white and blue and looks so pretty! We took photos about noon right when classes were letting out so there were quite a few people looking at me like I was nuts. What else is new?

The picture below is a result of me playing around with my camera's self timer. I don't know why I've never used it before! And this is not a fake laugh... my chair decided to roll and almost flip me over. So yeah.

RE.peat.

This is not a picture of my glute. It just shows the back zipper really well.

Breakdown:
turtleneck- Gap
skirt- old dress made into a skirt
jewelry- thrifted or gifted
shoes- Naturalizer

I remember when Mom came home with the dress my skirt came from. BOY was it ugly! Like oog-lay ugly. I've had it for about 2 years and have worn it maybe 4 times. And I think this is my last time wearing it. You see, it's tight. Before I ate chicken shawarma with wheat pita for lunch it was tight. Afterwards, when these pictures were taken, the waistband was... well, let's just say that I unzipped it for the drive home. I'll probably be putting it on Etsy soon.

I should also disclose that I have worn this necklace every time I've worn this skirt. Obviously my creativity is lacking. Is that bad?

I Would Rather

This is what I would rather be wearing right now. All while frolicking in a field of red clover. With a good book. And Inna-Godda-Da-Vida playing. And a wedding cake with cream snowball. And a popsicle. And long hair.

With these shoes that are in my closet just begging to be worn.

Can you imagine Melissa Joan Hart wearing these in Sabrina the Teenage Witch? Oh the 90s, how you sucked the life out of style.

Instead, I am wearing one of my least favorite jeans with the only shirt that felt remotely right on my body today, buried in my readings for class.

PS: Check out this article from College Fashion on flatforms like my flower ones above! How do you feel about them?

PPS: Did you notice my header? I finally figured out how to make one of my own... I know, I'm slow. I am really proud of it so don't diss it!

PPPS: WHO IS EXCITED THAT H&M WILL FINALLY MAKE ONLINE SHOPPING IN THE U.S. AVAILABLE AT THE END OF THE YEAR?!!! I bet you can't tell that I am.

I look like a box of crayons

Let's face it, I look like a box of crayons. I wore this dress to class today and got some weird looks, but they were mostly from the 5th grade classes walking by on the way to the cafeteria.

Breakdown:
dress- Civvies on Broughton in Savannah, GA
boots- Shoe Station (can't remember the brand)
rings- Mommed and gifted

My school weeks are abnormal now since I am in my teaching methods. What that means is... I don't have class on campus because we meet at a combined elementary-junior high so we can be closer to our students. So basically, I see the same people every single day. All day. All day. In other words, I can't wear the same thing 2 days in a row like I do sometimes. What? You don't do that? Liar.

My hair has been in a really awkward state for about 3 weeks now and I am already tired of it! It's at that stage where it either needs to be cut short again, or I have to wait for it to grow out. And, due to my first-time-in-8-years hi-lites in October, I now have awkward bangs from breakage. I haven't had bangs since 10th grade and I don't want them! They make everything more difficult!

This is an up close shot of my ring! I bought it a few years ago at a shop in downtown Denham Springs (my town) and a woman at church made it! Her jewelry is always creative and fantastic! I even got one exactly like this with a red stone for my friend Heidi. I love the twisty wires with the dark grey stone!

Listen to the Rhythm

Breakdown:
cardigan- F21
sweater- Gap
skirt- homemade from a nasty dress
tights- Target
boots- no clue
jewelry- thrifted

I actually wore this yesterday... but I didn't take pictures until late and then I watched the tube for 3 hours. Pretty Little Liars was on. Don't judge me.

Anyway, my friend Audrey took these while standing under the cover outside of my apartment door.  While I was at the back of a neighboring building being pelted in the eyes by raindrops.  Can you see the raindrops on my sweater?

Mom finished this skirt the other day and this is my first time wearing it! I feel a bit like Tania. Maybe it's the neutral layering.

Like a Lady

I wore this dress today to my sorority's Founder's Day luncheon! I scored this beauty at Ahab Bowen in Dallas, TX when I was there in August. Besides the incredible lace and 60s vibe, it's the color of butter. And I love butta'.

I feel as though if Lily Bass was Serena van der Woodsen's mom in the 1960s, she would have worn this dress. And probably had her hair fixed the same way.

When I tried on this dress, it was too long for my petiteness and the sleeves hit right above my wrists. Sooooo we took it to my favorite tailor (her shop smells like jasmine rice, yummy) and had the sleeves and the hem shortened. Never be afraid to take an item to the tailor if you love it! It usually turns out the way you want and your clothes fit better!

A Star is Born

I have to admit that I love this outfit! I don't know what it is, but I just do. I felt really really sassy in these high-waisted jeans. Rest assured that I was DEFINITELY channeling Barbra. Leather blazer, classic white shirt, funky rainbow braided belt, high-waisted jeans, and mocassin boots? Perfection. Not that I'm bragging.

Speaking of Barbra, Clint Eastwood is talking about doing the 4th remake of A Star is Born and casting Beyonce as the lead role. Can I confess that I am not happy? The 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson is one of my FAVORITE movies of all time! The only person I can think of that could even possibly do justice to Barbra's performance is Jennifer Hudson. She's got the right 'tude to sing my absolute favorite song, "Queen Bee". Other than Jen, I cannot think of anyone else. (Secretly, I am waiting to be cast for the role. Clint? Are you listening? PICK ME!) And who is going to take Kris Kristofferson's place? Someone originally folk but can turn rock & roll for the character. Any suggestions?

Breakdown:
leather jacket- Guess via Goodwill
shirt- K.C. Parker (kid's brand... I know)
jeans- Levi's
belt- thrifted
boots- Buffalo Exchange

Aaaaaand insert awkward leg photo...

Preference Point

Can I tell you a story about this skirt? I can? Okay, good. This is my old Preference skirt from sorority recruitment. The pattern was an old bridesmaid pattern and the top is horrible. I mean horrible. But I kept it, because who is going to buy an old, ugly bridesmaid-looking dress that was custom fitted for me? That's right. No one.

There it was, just sitting in my closet, waiting to be worn again but having no hopes. But then, when I was attempting to sleep last night, this outfit came to me. The bottom line is that I really wanted to wear this collar and this is all that I could come up with. Suggestions?

Breakdown:
tee- BCBG
skirt- homemade
jacket- TJ Maxx
shoes- Naturalizer
necklace- thrifted

So there you go, AOIIs with old ugly preference dresses, my challenge to you is to attempt to style your old nemesis!

Oh, How I Love Thee, Pencil Skirts

HA! Did I fool you into thinking that this entire post would be about pencil skirts? I did? Oh, well then I guess that's good. Because it is.

Here's the thing: I like pencil skirts... on other people. Again, here's the thing: I'm 5'3 and petite all over, with hips, and a tiny waist (I'm not bragging), and a butt, and, *ahem*, shapely legs. I'm curvy, but little.

Let's define exactly what a pencil skirt is, shall we?
Pencil Skirt- noun: usually high waisted, body-hugging and cut towards the knee. The pencil skirt, when lying flat, is significantly smaller towards the bottom.

For me, pencil skirts have never fit. Trust me, I've tried them all! They are always too tight in the hips which results in me screaming "WHAT THE HECK?" in the dressing room. Not pretty. And even if they pretty much fit through the hip, they are too long. Now now, don't think that I don't take things to the tailor, because I do. But it never feels worth it for pencil skirts.

I have, however, tried on petites before. Problem: squatty. You petite ladies know what I mean! The shirts may be the right length, but wide. The skirts may be the right length, but the hips are practically where your waist is. Or, the worst, someone could mistake you for a high school secretary who hasn't invested in new clothes since 1977. Why I chose the year 1977 I do not know. But you get my drift.

Solution? The straight skirt. The cut is what it sounds like, straight. Ahh, joy! They fit the waist, I fill out the hips, but it doesn't make me look like a short triangle! Because I have hips and a butt, I can naturally fill out the skirt. So I am, in fact, relying on my own God-given body to wear the clothes. And isn't that how it is supposed to be?

If you have any comments on this, I would love to hear your trials and victories with things like this! And if you have any other clothing debacles you would like to hear about, just let me know!

Professor Juicy Fruit

I could have titled this post "Colonel Mustard", but I wanted to be original. And since my outfit reminds me of what a Professor should wear and my tights are the color of Juicy Fruit... I think you know the end of the story.

Breakdown:
coat- Wilson's Leather
turtleneck- Gap
skirt- thrifted (and hemmed)
belt, jewelry- thrifted
hat- Burlington (I think)
tights- Urban Outfitters
socks- Target
boots- really really really old

It is cold outside. True, it is 40 degrees and to some people, that isn't cold. Here in Louisiana where our summers are barely breathable, 40 degrees is cold. I was warm all day except for my knees... I wonder what caused that? Hmm.

Well I'm off! Human Target is on and it is my only substitute for 24.

Are you dressed for a Saints game? Or an LSU game?

Those were questions I heard when I wore this outfit yesterday. And the answer is no. I am, however, ready for baseball season! I can already hear the ping! ping! of batting practice! So exciting!

Breakdown:
coat- Wilson's Leather
top- NY & Company
skirt- vintage, Time Warp
pumps- Calvin Klein

I wound have posted these last night, but I spent the night at my apt with Savannah and our internet wasn't up yet. Time on the phone with cable companies trying to get my own password for the network... so much fun. BUT we had breakfast for dinner and slid down the stairs on boxes! Cheap thrills!

I have worn this skirt many times before but never taken pictures in it. I can't remember why, but I was probably too busy or tired or whatever. I've been on the search for a brown leather skirt too. I have so many leather pieces in my wardrobe. Seriously, PETA would have a field day in my closet. I'm surprised they haven't egged my car yet.

-Sarah

PS: I just found out that there is a vintage shop right behind my favorite coffee shop near school! I will be checking it out next week to see if it's any good. Oh and I have added quite a few things to the shop so check it out and buy something!

Alegria

Today was super busy! Workouts, showering (a feat some days), and Cirque de Soleil Alegria with Heidi! Seeing people with 8 packs swing from bars and ribbons and watching contortionists through my fingers was so much fun! Those things freak me out but amaze me at the same time. The acrobats they usually start out with make me dizzy and nauseated. Still cool though!

I changed the settings on my point & shoot and I think that is the reason why these pictures are blue. But the building we were in front of looked blue from the sky and reflections too, so maybe it's always like that. I'm not sure.

Breakdown:
denim jacket- Gap Kids (circa 7th grade)
shirt- Target
cords- Gap
shoes- Bandolino
purse- thrifted
jewelry- gifted or thrifted

Confessions of a Ferocious Mom Look-Alike

Confession: I didn't wear this outfit this way.  Why, you ask?  Well here's the thing: I had to move furniture and stuff up my stairs and we all know that lifting things up stairs should not be done in heels and even though I work out (um, yes, I do) I'm still a weakling and my balance is, let's say, unpredictable.  Did I just set a record for the longest run on sentence?

Breakdown:
sweater- New York & Company
jeans- Levi's
wedges- BCBG
scarf- Target

After unloading stuff at my apt, Mom and I wound up at an antique shop in Livingston, LA and that is where these shots were taken.  It was super sketchy and the below picture is what I was doing when the townies were slowing down as they were riding by.  I'm fericious, I tell ya!

I feel a little "Mom-ish" in my sweater and jeans, but whatev.  It's comfortable.  These cute little bow shoes were my high school graduation shoes!  When you are graduating on a football field and rain generally occurs right before parish fairs, football games, and graduations, stilletoes are a big fat no-no!  I only own 1 other pair of wedges because I can't really walk in them.  Give me platforms and I'm good, but wedges are a mystery!

Illusions Part 2

Breakdown:
tuxedo shirt- Goodwill
sequin skirt- Goodwill
shoes- Converse
jewelry- Goodwill

See my skirt? Yes? Well, it's an illusion. I'm actually not wearing a skirt. It's a tube top. I know, I know. Weird. And they look like bike shorts in these pictures!

Mom and Dad didn't like this outfit today. Nothing else was working and this was the only idea I had, so here it is! Rainy, possibly cooler later on, gross and humid. How does a person dress for that?! Come on!

Also, I have had these shoes since the 10th grade... 7 years.

Single Ladies, Fur, and Dirt

First of all, I would like you thank the iPhone 4 alarm glitch for making me late for church this morning.  As a result, I did not have time to wash my hair.  So I Pssssst!'d it up and, as Tim Gunn says, "Make it work."

Second (and last), thank you for a great first 6 months on the blog! I've learned a ton and can't wait for the rest of my first full year! (Shameless New Year's sappy-ness)

After church I had flash mob practice.  You may think I'm lying, but I'm not.  It involves lots of old ladies, a man I will call "Divo", and the Single Ladies dance.  As you can see, I was practicing during our photoshoot today.  Also, you should know that this is the 3rd time I'm wearing this denim shirt without washing it.  That means that my hair and shirt are dirty.  Go me!

Breakdown:
shirt- Levi's
cardigan- PacSun
jeans- Levi's
belt- Gap (old)
boots- Clarks
jewelry- thrifted
vest- GapKids (via Goodwill)
