Illusions

The above photo was taken by the Dennis Howard, Jr.  You can usually find him on campus at LSU dressed in sweats or man-pris, in the gym with his teammates, or on the field at Tiger Stadium dressed as #33.  Today, he was my first attempt at a photoshoot.  (Thanks DJ!)

Breakdown:
dress: thrifted Karta (Saks 5th Ave) dress at $4.99
pumps: Antonio Melani
jewelry: Mommed

This dress makes me feel a little Twiggy-esque.  If only I had the haircut to go along with it... And finding it at Goodwill saved me over $400, so having to mend the sleeve and send it to the dry cleaners was worth the so-called trouble.

Cowboys, Miners, and Dior

The title of today's post may be confusing, but I am about to explain it, promise!

I am wearing a thrifted pair of Dingo cowboy boots, Levi's (that's where the miners come in) and a thrifted boy's Dior blazer.  Yes, it's true, some crazy person threw out a Christian Dior blazer. Some people seriously need to get their head checked!

When I got home from work today my brother walked into the kitchen and said, "So what are you?" To which I replied, "Myself."  Then he said, "No seriously, what are you?"  And I said, "Seth, this is not a costume. I wore this to work today."  And he said, "Oh" and gave me an awkward look.  We have this conversation at least once a week.

I had to do the footloose dance in these boots.  And yes, it was fun.

Oh and my hair is a fro today.  I cannot remember if I have shown the fro since cutting it so here it is!

You put the sparks to my flame

Song of the day: "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John

Disclosure: this is the 4th outfit I've put on today. I ate my weight in biscuits this morning so nothing fits like it normally does. Worth it!

You may not be able to tell from these pictures, but I am now a brunette. True, it's a light light brown (my now natural color) but it's still brown. I imagine that this is what my hair would look like if I never stepped in the sun during the summer and it never got sun-bleached.

Breakdown:
shirt- BCBG
skirt- I made it
belt- Gap
flats- Seychelles

Check out the bugs we have in the front yard... cool, huh?

I'm off to observe my 10th graders!

Antlers and Claws

If you do not pay attention to baseball, or sports, or ESPN, or the MLB Network, or live under a rock, you may not know that THE RANGERS ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!

Fact: I love baseball.
The Rangers deserve this ALCS win and their first trip to the World Series.  Watching Josh Hamilton's American League MVP acceptance speech made me cry.  That might make me a sap but the dude deserves it!  So in honor of my excitement, I wore my Rangers tee to church this morning with pride!

Breakdown:
Rangers tee- Ballpark at Arlington store
jeans- Levi's Riley jeans
flats- Seychelles
belt- Gap
bat- borrowed from my brother

ps: This is the first time since about the 7th grade that I am wearing a belt with my jeans.  Let me just say that it was difficult finding a belt to fit around my hips... yikes!

Courage is the triumph of the soul

Song of the day: "Anything You Want" by Jason Mraz
New life goal: see J.Mraz live multiple times

Last night I wore the below outfit to dinner.  The rest of the pictures turned out... not so well.  So this is what you get!

Today I had to go observe a 10th grade English class and this is what I wore!  Some days it is easier to figure out how to dress appropriately for that setting and in a way that doesn't make me look like one of the kids.  But I still want to look like myself so this is complicated.

Mom found this skirt at a thrift store a while back and it's actually a suit.  I still need to get the jacket tailored... it is on the list.

Breakdown:
blouse- Gadzook's
skirt- Goodwill
flats- J. Simpson
jewelry- Goodwill
ponytail holder- because I'm classy like that

The Sound of Sunshine

If I don't make much sense today, it is because my head is in a fog and I cannot think.  Running on 4ish hours of sleep is not good for my concentration... so if you see me on the road today, swerve.

These pictures are actually from yesterday, but I took them right before I went to a meeting and then I went to a concert at the HOB.  I saw Michael Franti and Spearhead and the opening act was that guy Whitney Port dated when The City first started-- that Austrailian dude! Michael Franti wound up coming into the VIP section where we were and stood right next to me for a minute and sang, which totally made up for the creepy guy next to us.  I also won a Twitter contest that the HOB had so I got a free CD! It's the first contest I have ever won... so I'm still pretty excited about it.

Breakdown:
dress- BCBG
cardigan- PacSun
belt- Gap (super old)
flats- Seychelles
necklace and jewelry- Goodwill

I don't mean to brag, but I got a ton of compliments on this necklace. I always do. Maybe it's because it has the stone with the hard wire but the pearl keeps it classy? I'm not sure. Either way, it's gorg.

ps: Olivia, if you're reading this, I hope this distracts you from work for a little while!

Can you see the lights twinkle?

Song of the Day: "Hello, Dolly!" from Hello, Dolly!  If you have never seen this movie, you need to!  I watched it this morning while I was getting ready for church and it made my morning so much better!

And no, the waiter's chorus when they sing "Hello, Dolly!" did not inspire this outfit.  I was already planning on wearing it today.  But the fact that I said "wouldn't it be awesome if men wore chops and handlebar staches now?" and got to church to see that Dennis Junior had grown chops and a handlebar stache... perfection!

I don't know about all of you people, but I hardly ever wear my white oxford.  I have a prejudice against shirts that require ironing.  I love to iron, but it still takes time that I do not particularly want to spend.  Thus, clothes that require ironing do not get worn by me often.

Breakdown:
oxford- Gap
skirt- vintage, Time Warp
bow tie- thrifted
belt- I have no idea
pumps- Liz Claiborne
jewelry- Goodwilled or Mommed

Number of times that I got told I looked like a Broadway tap dancer/waitress/casino dealer today: 8.  The day is young...

-Sarah

ps: I tried to curl my hair this morning and wound up looking like Laurie from That 70's Show. Then it turned into a refined Farrah Fawcett.  Score!

Nothing comes between me and my... Levi's?

It was 70 degrees when I left this morning for work and by the time I got home, it was 90. Yay Louisiana! After work I found myself at Dillards getting my Clinique stuff and then at Target. And I have an announcement to make about my trip to Target-- I left with exactly the item I went for and nothing else. This has never happened before in my life!

Breakdown:
jeans- Levi's
blouse- I made it (also seen here)
sandals- Bandolino
jewelry- thrifted
belt- Gap (super duper old)

I remember the first time I saw these jeans... I was in Levi's Square in San Fran in June of 2007 and I instantly fell in love. However, I did not want to spend over $100 on high-waisted jeans that I would not wear often enough for the price tag to be worth it. A couple of months later, I came home from class and they were sitting on my bed! Mom found them at the Levi's outlet near here for $30. Can't beat that!

Ask me how many weird looks I got today for wearing jeans up to my ribcage; I dare you.

-Sarah

ps: I feel like Barbra Streisand in A Star is Born in these jeans... like when she was singing "Queen Bee" and Kris Kristofferson was in the bar audience. That makes them all the more fun to wear!

Projects, projects, projects

I have never been a fan of projects. As a student, I would rather take a test or write a paper simply because they are easier and do not require coloring. I have already vowed to not give my future students useless projects just as busy work. Why? Because I know that parents help their kids with projects and that it's a pain. That being said, when my neice, Adriana, called me to ask if I could help her out for a project at school, I jumped on it! I don't really know much about the specifics, but she and her partner are doing a project on office wear. Here are the looks that I put together for her!

This look is classic with a twist! My skirt is from Express. I got a black one first and really really wanted the blue one, but I wasn't going to pay that much for something so frivilous. So I waited and bought it when it went on sale for $7! My blouse is from Target and my belt is from my Mawmaw's closet.

I also wore this outfit (with a couple of changes) on my Worst Day Ever about a year ago. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong that day.  Printer ran out of ink and I had to go to my sister's to print stuff, guys down the street cut off our water when I was mid-shampoo, and I had to teach my peers and be videoed for my special ed methods class. See? Worst Day Ever.

Even though I am not a pants wearer most of the time but most people who work wear pants... so I caved. I bought these pants on sale at Dillards a few years ago and have worn them only once. I have only worn them once because it took Mom that long to hem them! I have had this green blouse since the 7th grade... I kid you not. It is still cute and pretty so I keep it around.

Did anyone notice that I missed a front belt loop?

For this look I wanted to be funky but still work appropriate. I found this dress about a year ago on sale at Dillards... again. AND these shoes were $18 at Marshalls. Can't beat that!

This dress has been a favorite of my closet for at least 4 years. First I wanted to show it with heels...

And then with flats! If you're like me and spend your dressier days in front of a classroom running around like a nutcase, you would rather wear flats.

This last one is more for summer but the weather here is perfect right now so I just went for it! I found this skirt at St. Vincent de Paul over by LSU with a matching jacket in the kids section. My blouse is from either Stein Mart or Marshalls... I can't remember. But it's easy, comfortable, appropriate, and it's cute!

Well there you go! 5 work appropriate looks that can go with literally any body type in any situation.

Caught in a jet stream

Song of the day: "Engines" by Snow Patrol

Breakdown:
tee- Gap
jeans- TJ Maxx
leather jacket- Guess (via Goodwill)
scarf- Target
flats- Seychelles
jewelry (not shown)- Goodwill

I have an announcement to make...
IT'S FAAAAAAAAAAAAALL!
Here in south LA, this is a huge deal. When the temps fall below 80 people get their ski parkas out. By the end of my school day, the jacket came off because it was blazing hot in dance and yoga. Maybe it was because my swing dance partner is creepy and stares me down the entire time.
